UP Lady Maroons vs UE Lady Warriors

Haven’t been really giving much thought about since I’m still in basketball mode, but then, since everyone’s talking about it, I’ll go with the flow. The UAAP Volleyball season’s gonna be back in like 29 days and I saw the 4 opening matches in the Women’s. I was surprised and I think it’s gonna be the most exciting opening weekend in Women’s Volleyball considering that all matches can potentially go up to 5 sets.

UE vs UP

I really think this is an equal match-up. Although the Lady Warriors defeated the Lady Maroons in preseason, the Lady Maroons have been showing a lot of promise. It was obvious that UP won the recruitment wars last year and despite having a very young line-up, they are keeping up with veteran teams. Players who have impressed me so far are Mangulabnan, Al Sayed, Ong, Badong and Gaiser. These girls are the future of UP. If they can develop their skills further, they will be a strong team in the years to come.

UE might have lost Rosale, Dizon and Caballero, but the good thing with their team is that they have found reliable scorers in Bulan, Dawis and Nebrida. In the recently concluded PVC league, UE defeated UP in 4 sets and went on to win the championship. Faith Bulan even won the MVP in the said league. Last year, with a different and much better coach, UE was able to challenge the top teams well, even having close sets with them. With their much improved floor defense and offense, I’m excited how UE will perform this season. They may be sort of rebuilding but they will definitely be in fighting form.

In this match-up, I’m still predicting UE to win but it won’t be easy. I have a feeling it will go up to 5 sets. UP may be young but they have loads of talent that if they just outgrow the pressure or the jelling as early as the first game, they can be more competitive. However, of course, UE’s experience will be the factor here considering most of them are in their 2nd-4th years.

Prediction: UE in 5 sets
